But he fought against the odds and prevailed
His journey through India’s early space programme was marked by difficult failures. The SLV mission suffered a major setback when the rocket failed to place its satellite into orbit and fell into the sea. For a young space programme still developing its capabilities, such failures exposed the technical challenges and uncertainties that surrounded India’s ambitions in space.
Beyond the difficulties of building technology, India also faced a growing challenge to its security. Cross-border terrorism brought violence, infiltration, and instability along the nation’s borders. The threat created an environment where technological progress was closely tied to national security, increasing the pressure on India to develop its own defence capabilities and reduce dependence on foreign technology.
That pursuit of technological independence brought another challenge from the international community. India’s Pokhran nuclear tests drew strong criticism and led to US sanctions, restricting access to important technologies and resources. The restrictions added another layer of pressure to an already difficult journey, as India’s scientific ambitions increasingly had to advance under external constraints.
